Building started in 1858 on the request of the Emperor, Napoléon III, the Pharo Palace was to be the reflection of the Empress’ residence at Biarritz, "a dwelling on the waterside”, in the words of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte. Finally, no-one ever lived in it and in the end the Empress gave it to the City of Marseille in 1903. Today, the building has become a place of work housing various municipal departments, as well as a conference centre. The people of Marseille and visitors come here above all for the magnificent view over the Vieux Port, the bay and the Château d'If, from the Emile Duclaux garden which is open all day long.
